How Do I receive my subscription?
Every week we email a .pdf of the quiz. The first document is the clues only, good for reading out loud during the quiz, and the next document contains clues and answer, as well as an explanation of how it all ties into the theme. Some hosts like to print these materials out, while others just read from their phones.
We will also include the printable answer sheet .pdf every week, just in case you lost your .pdf and need to print more.
Will you host my trivia night?
Probably not.
We started No Frills Trivia because we wanted to spread our successful weekly pub quiz to more venues: way more than we could host on our own. Our mission is to provide the tools you need to become your own trivia host. You get to do the fun part (interacting with the players), and we’ll take care of the hard part (coming up with the clues).
That being said: maybe! If you’ve got a unique partnership opportunity (especially in the Minneapolis area), contact us.
What’s your quiz like?
Fun!
It’s 20 questions of all different topics that all connect to a secret theme. The best way to see what it’s like is to check out our sample quiz.
If you want to read more about why we design the quiz the way we do, check out our trivia philosophy.
That questions was factually wrong!
Sorry about that.
We research and verify the facts in all of our clues, and we feel confident that every quiz is as accurate as possible. Sometimes, with a complicated subject (especially topics like history or science) we need to simplify a question for the sake of brevity. Whenever we do that, we check multiple online sources to make sure we’re not saying something that isn’t true.
But every once in a while, something sneaks past our fact checking. If that happened to you, remember it’s meant to be fun! Don’t take it personally, and remember that we’re always trying our best to be 100% accurate.
Hey, that’s not a question!
Neither is that!
Maybe it’s all the Jeopardy we’ve watched, or maybe it’s our time doing crossword puzzles, but we don’t think a clue needs to end in a question mark to be a good trivia question. The subject of our questions is usually phrased using words like “this actor” or “this country,” and teams should easily catch on to how our clues work.
Some questions are a little tricky to decode, and in those cases we underline the subject of the sentence. As a host, it’s good to emphasize that part of the clue, so teams know what we’re looking for.
How do you come up with all these clues?
We just love trivia! Mostly, we love anecdotes and stories, as well as getting lost on Wikipedia.
We’re a husband/wife team that started by hosting our own trivia night at our brewery, and we realized we were pretty good at writing questions. We’ve had a lot of time to perfect our style and learn what works and what doesn’t.
Every week, we start by brainstorming clues and answers that might form a secret theme, and then we take to the internet to research until we have a quiz we’re happy with.
When is a good time to host a Pub Quiz?
A quiz turns an ordinarily slow time into a bustling rush. Because of this, Friday and Saturday nights probably aren’t your best bet (those times are busy anyway). You’d be better off picking a weeknight, especially towards the end of dinner time if you serve food. Whichever time you pick, expect trivia to last about 2 hours. Players will usually start showing up at least 1/2 hour before, and some will linger once the quiz is done.
The best time slot for your pub quiz is ultimately up to the specific needs of your business. Just don’t be surprised if trivia night becomes one of your most popular evenings.
